The Texas Hill Country is home to some of the most fascinating geological formations in the United States, including the Glen Rose Formation. This unique rock formation, which is found in central Texas, contains a wealth of fossilized remains from ancient sea creatures that lived millions of years ago.

 

The Glen Rose Formation was formed during the Cretaceous period, between 144 and 99 million years ago. During this time, the region was covered by a shallow sea, which teemed with a diverse range of marine life. Over millions of years, the remains of these creatures were deposited in the sediment at the bottom of the sea, which eventually became the Glen Rose Formation.

 

One of the most iconic fossils found in the Glen Rose Formation is that of the long-necked plesiosaur. This prehistoric marine reptile had a body similar to that of a sea turtle, but with a long, flexible neck and four flippers. Plesiosaurs lived during the Mesozoic era, from around 205 to 66 million years ago, and were top predators in the ancient sea. Another popular fossil found in the Glen Rose Formation is that of the ammonite, a spiral-shelled mollusk that lived during the same time as the plesiosaurs. Ammonites were one of the most abundant creatures in the ancient sea, and their fossils are found in many parts of the world. In the Glen Rose Formation, visitors can see the remains of these fascinating creatures embedded in the rock, with their distinctive spiral shells still intact.

 

Other fossils found in the Glen Rose Formation include ancient clams, snails, and bivalves, as well as the remains of giant sea lizards known as mosasaurs.
